The hidden treasure of Ljubljana (pronounced Loo-blee-yana) is the capital city of Slovenia, formerly the northern area of Yugoslavia until it became independent in 1991. Nestled between Austria and Hungary, Ljubljana is a riot of baroque and medieval architecture seated on a river plain at the foot of majestic Alpine peaks. With a population of approximately 280,000 it is a compact attractive city that makes exploring and returning very easy. Getting there is simple too, with flight times of just over two hours, it’s served from the UK by Easyjet and Adria Airways. English is widely spoken and Slovenians are known to be among the friendliest nations in Europe!

As a city it is proud of both its heritage and recent ascendancy to the European elite, aswell as ever improving commerce it also weighs in with hundreds of cultural events annually. To soak up some of Ljubljana’s unique history (it was once under Italian rule) and culture try exploring the Cathedral of St Nicholas, the Castle perched above the city (which has spectacular views from the tower), explore the National Gallery, take a stroll over Dragon Bridge straddling the Lubljanica River or simply chill out in the chestnut tree lined avenues of the Tivoli Park. Alternatively if you are likely to be thirsty, there is the Brewery Museum or the fourteen wine areas surrounding the capital for you and the boys to imbibe and adjudicate a collection of local beverages. For the adventurous try white water rafting or hover crafting on the nearby Sava River north-west of the city or take a trip up country for an unrivalled white water experience, alternatively how about a spot of quad biking, paintballing or karting. Perhaps a Sunday morning cool-down with a splash and dash at the Water Park.
You’ll enjoy extremely pleasant and relaxed evenings with an exciting range of bars, pubs and restaurants, the local food takes its inspiration from Austria, Italy and Hungary, so think pizza, goulash and tasty fat boy puddings, while the immediate surrounds provide some excellent wine. Ljubljana is renowned for its beautiful evenings and the nightlife in the city is lively, friendly and welcoming. After a full day you’ll be enjoying very full nights until the sun rises over the spectacular landscape. It’s one of our very favourite places in Europe – it could easily become yours too!
